How To Prepare IBPS PO Mains Exam | Syllabus | Exam Pattern

Unlike every year, this year also IBPS has made some major changes in IBPS PO Exam Syllabus & Exam Pattern. IBPS is all set to follow the exam pattern and syllabus of SBI PO Mains from this year onwards. IBPS has decided to incorporate total 155 questions under 3 hours of duration.

New exam pattern of IBPS PO Mains exam has been provided below- The mains of IBPS PO will have the following exam pattern -

IBPS PO Mains Exam Pattern(New Changes In Pattern)

The mains exam of IBPS PO is divided into 4 sections of Objective Test followed by a descriptive test. The exam pattern of Mains Exam has changed from this year onwards. Highlight of changes this year - 
  • Computer awareness section has been removed and Computer Aptitude section has been added to the Reasoning Ability section.
  • Quantitative Aptitude section is now called Data Interpretation & Analysis - Hence DI questions are expected to form a majority of this section.
  • The total questions in the exam have reduced to 155 from 200 last year. This is again on the lines of the SBI Exam.
  • The overall time of the objective exam has increased to 180 mins from 140 mins last year. This is again on the lines of the SBI Exam. With questions reduced and the time increase, the difficulty level of the questions is expected to go up.

New Pattern Questions Asked in SBI PO Mains 2017
  • Inequality Questions related to new pattern Inequality (Quantity I, Quantity II )
  • Reading Comprehension à There were two Reading Comprehension of new type with 5 questions in each of them. Topic of RC was Banking and Economy and other one was related to Noise in production in corporate world.
  • Machine Input-Output à Diagram Based Input Output was Introduced.
  • Symbol Based Puzzle à New Pattern Symbol based questions in reasoning
  • New Pattern Puzzle (Calculation based- shelf and photo frames)
  • Para Jumble àThere was a new type introduced in Jumbled sentences where they already gave you the starting and ending sentence rest of the arrangement was to be found out by the candidate
  • Error Spotting à  4 questions were based on a new pattern where there were multiple errors in one sentence and candidate have to identify all the parts with errors in them.

  • Quantity based inequality problems.
IBPS PO Mains Exam 2017-18 - Syllabus (Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude)
Puzzles - Level of Mains puzzles is expected to be difficult. Try to practice questions involving at least 2-3 parameters.
Seating Arrangement - This topic again will be difficult and may be asked in combination with other reasoning topics like Blood relations, ranking or other parameters.
Inequality - Try to practice Coded as well as direct questions from this topic.
Coding Decoding – New Pattern as well as old pattern.
Syllogism - You can expect a moderate level of syllogism. Make sure that you cover normal as well as Reverse Syllogism.
Input Output - You can expect 1 set of this topic as well. Practice Questions on New Pattern as Asked in SBI PO Mains.
Coding Decoding - This topic again may be asked based on new pattern, so practice accordingly. Try to practice number coding based questions as well.
Verbal Reasoning - You can expect around 5-10 questions from verbal section. This may involve topics like -
Statement and Assumption/ Statement and Course of Action/ Statement and Argument/ Cause and Effect/ Deriving conclusion from passage
Data Sufficiency - Try to cover questions based on 2-3 statements. Questions would be based on other topics of reasoning section, so a thorough practice will help you in this section.
Miscellaneous topics - This involves questions from Blood Relations, Direction Sense and Ranking.
• Computer Aptitude - You can also come across 2-3 questions of this topic, which may be passage/ flowchart based.

IBPS PO Descriptive Test Syllabus

This section will have 2 questions - It is expected that 1 essay and 1 letter will be asked in this section. Candidates should practice writing essays on current topics preferably on a computer. For letter writing both formal and informal letters should be practised. 
Important information about the exam pattern and the exam syllabus - 
  • IBPS PO Prelims Exam is of qualifying nature. Marks obtained in mains examination only will be counted for interview call. Final merit list will be made on the basis of total marks obtained in IBPS PO Mains exam & Interview.
  • There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in prelims & mains.
  • There will be sectional as well as over-all cut off in prelims & mains both.
